IHL voted June 18 to move the University of Mississippi’s beleaguered rebel statue, after years of efforts by students and others with much less reverence for the Confederacy than Charles Scott and the women who erected the statue to celebrate the “lost cause” of white supremacy.
In response to the brutalization of these black bodies, Tougaloo College is continuing the tradition of freedom fighting by establishing the Reuben V. Anderson Institute for Social Justice. “It remains our responsibility to contribute to the education of students to train them to become the ethical leaders, change agents and social justice advocates of tomorrow making meaningful change throughout the world,” Tougaloo College President Carmen J. Walters said.

When people are locked in the grips of poverty and racism, when their voices are drowned out and ignored, and when their hopes are dashed, they turn to the only forms of protest they have at their disposal. As we have seen in the past weeks, Black communities have predictably, virulently and understandably exploded.
In Mississippi, local officials have followed the president’s lead. Magnolia Alderman Joe Cornacchione dabbled in dog-whistle politics after the president’s comments with a Facebook post titled, “Snow Plows for Snow Flakes.” In response to the post, a number of his friends suggested using fire hoses and firearms on the protesters.
What surprised me the most was how many people honked their support at us. About half of all the cars that passed us honked or did the “black power” salute out of their window, which was extremely heartening to see.
Like Mr. Floyd, both were killed in situations that are hard to grasp, one in her home and the other while jogging in his neighborhood. As the daughter of Civil Rights leaders Medgar and Myrlie Evers, I feel their family’s pain.
Behind closed doors, at most white gatherings and even at churches, they still use the n-word for black people even now. Those who have stopped saying that word have replaced it with “animals” or “thugs,” all while diminishing and discounting any experiences of racism a black person may have.
