Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney is not sure whether Blue Cross Blue Shield or the University of Mississippi Medical Center will prevail in the ongoing reimbursement dispute that has thousands of Mississippians out of network at the state’s flagship public hospital. But with the 2023 legislative session on the horizon, he has a bill in mind to keep it from happening again.
Just over a month after the State of Mississippi succeeded in getting the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, the traditionally conservative State of Kansas voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday night to keep protections for abortion rights in their state constitution.
Now that Mississippi’s only abortion clinic has shut its doors permanently, an advocacy group is erecting billboards on highways around the capital city region to inform residents of the availability of telemedicine-prescribed abortion pills from doctors outside Mississippi.
Advikaa Anand, 18, writes that abortion is a complex moral issue, but choosing to keep one’s baby is just as difficult a decision to make than choosing to have an abortion—a difficult decision only pregnant persons should make.
U.S. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., is pushing for Congress to adopt a nationwide ban on abortion once cardiac activity becomes detectable, or around the sixth week of pregnancy.
“I think it’s important to understand that state abortion bans and restrictions will increase people’s need to travel out of state to get an abortion,” Social Work Professor Gretchen E. Ely writes. “This will prompt more people seeking help from abortion funds, which themselves are facing new kinds of legal and financial pressures.”
While street preachers boomed warnings of hellfire nearby, a throng of reporters surrounded Pink House Defender Kim Gibson in the Jackson Women’s Health Clinic’s driveway on June 24, 2022. Minutes earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court had overturned rejected the clinic’s attempt to block a 15-week Mississippi abortion ban, overturning Roe v. Wade and dooming the Pink House to close.
Now, with COVID vaccines finally available and recommended for all infants and children aged 6 months or older, communicating their safety and efficacy is the last mile for many families eligible for the shot.
The fate of Mississippi’s abortion trigger law, which will ban nearly all abortions in the state by July 7 if allowed to take effect, could be decided at a hearing in a Hinds County Chancery Court on Tuesday, July 5.
