More than 138,000 Mississippi residents lost power amid temperatures as high as the 90s since the arrival of severe thunderstorms last Friday, and thousands remained without power as storms continued to pummel the state this morning.
Anthony Shelvy, a social worker at Jefferson Comprehensive Health Center in Fayette, Miss., said Jefferson County has few resources to help domestic-violence victims and that the county’s crime-victim agency, which primarily focuses on domestic violence, only employs two people for the entire 527-square-mile area.
District 5 attorney Doug Evans tried 52-year-old Curtis Flowers six times for murder. Flowers is now suing Evans, accusing him of “malicious prosecution, abuse of process and false imprisonment.”

The Smith Robertson Museum & Cultural Center will host a brief showing and Q&A with Brice and Kiese Laymon on Feb. 12, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The recent deaths of Robert Loggins of Grenada, Miss., Damien Cameron of Braxton, Miss., and 3-month-old La’Mello Parker in Biloxi, Miss., continue to negatively affect each respective community. Their deaths involve accusations of police officers using excessive force, which further burdens their families today.
The protest against Confederate monuments as symbols of racial injustice is not new. It is also not new to Mississippi. As Karen Cox describes in her new book, “No Common Ground: Confederate Monuments and the Ongoing Fight for Racial Justice,” that protest was front and center in 1966 during the now infamous Meredith March in Mississippi.
