A Leflore County grand jury has yet again declined to indict Carolyn Bryant Donham for the 1955 abduction and lynching of Emmett Till, despite the discovery of an unserved arrest warrant in Donham’s name for kidnapping. The warrant dates back to the original investigation into the 14-year-old’s death, indicating that she was never arrested then.

Members of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation found an unserved 1955 warrant in the Leflore County Courthouse on June 21, 2022, for the arrest of suspects in the kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till. Leflore County native Dr. Emmitt Y. Riley III calls for accountability from District Attorney DeWayne Richardson and other Black political leaders, demanding them to “open a new investigation and finally move toward justice for Emmett Till.”
Memphis Comedian Katrina Coleman found racist stickers posted on a dumpster near their children’s predominantly Black elementary school in Memphis, Tenn. Coleman along with their children scraped them off together, using this as an example of how white parents can initiate change in a racist system by calling out white supremacy one small act at a time.
Jessie Daniels’ latest book, “Nice White Ladies: The Truth about White Supremacy, Our Role in It, and How We Can Help Dismantle It,” was named a Kirkus Best Book of 2021 in the non-fiction category. Talamieka Brice’s “A Mother’s Journey” is a film that follows her process in addressing traumas of the past in a quest to seek healing. Talamieka Brice will show “A Mother’s Journey” on Feb. 9, 2022, at noon for the Mississippi Department of Archives’ History Is Lunch series. The Smith Robertson Museum & Cultural Center will host a brief showing and Q&A with Brice and Kiese Laymon on Feb. 12, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sixty-six years later, and the fight for justice in Emmett Louis Till’s case continues and remains unsolved. Will there ever be justice? This dark spot in our history is painful enough, but to have our lawmakers and Justice Department silent on this is even more painful.
August 28, 2021 marks the 66th anniversary of Emmett Till’s gruesome murder in the Mississippi Delta. He would have turned 80 years old this year—just two years older than the current President of the United States. It is time for our region, state, and country to finally honor Emmett Till and his courageous mother with the creation of an Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley Mississippi Delta Civil Rights National Historic Park.
