Thompson, who also chairs the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee, told CNN today that he would consider calling former President Donald Trump and Republicans who communicated with him at the time of the insurrection to testify.
U.S. House Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Black Democrat, was the lone Mississippi member to vote in favor of removing monuments devoted to white supremacists from the halls of the nation’s Capitol today. A 285-120 majority passed the bill, House Resolution 3005, this evening with all 120 nay votes coming from Republican members, including two from Mississippi.
The Confederate sympathizers across the state sleep well tonight. Oh, 2020 was a tumultuous year for them, as they saw their beloved stars and bars removed from the state flag. But they know that they still have outsized political influence in the state.
A minority of 35 Republicans, including U.S. Sens. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker, voted to filibuster consideration of an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol insurrection that left five dead, including one Capitol Police officer.
As part of the American Rescue Plan passed in March, the Biden Administration increased the Earned Income Tax Credit for low- and middle-income workers. We are going to see millions of lives improved over the next year because of these changes, only to be erased when these provisions expire in 2022. We cannot let that happen. We must make these provisions permanent.
