Heinz Endowments honors Hope Credit Union CEO Bill Bynum for bringing attention to the problem of financial access for the people in the Deep South. The organization added that Bynum received the award for his work at the helm of Hope Credit Union and for combating race, gender and locational barriers to wealth.
Dr. Hilliard Lackey, a long-time professor at JSU, has paved a path for students from his own hometown to attend the historically Black college in west Jackson. In the years since, the Lackey Scholarship has gone to students ranked as low as eighth in the class, as well as to the highest-ranked student (other than the valedictorian and salutatorian) who has chosen to attend JSU.
Sixty years after the original Freedom Riders rolled into Jackson, Miss., after a treacherous bus journey down from Washington, D.C., a new generation of activists chose to start a new ride for equal rights and freedom at Tougaloo College on June 19, 2021, which was the first time in American history that Juneteenth had been celebrated as a federal holiday.
The film “Far East Deep South” follows Charles Chiu and his family’s journey from California to Mississippi in hopes of finding answers about his father and the filmmakers’ grandfather K. C. Lou. While the family learns about the life of K.C. Lou and his contributions to the surrounding communities in Pace, Miss., just northwest of Cleveland in Bolivar County, they also learn some harsh truths about life for Asian Americans living in the deep South during Jim Crow.
Victor Hugo Green’s “The Negro Motorist Green Book” was the guidebook for African American roadtrippers during the Jim Crow era. The guide offered services and places that were friendly to African Americans, while also highlighting the dangers of travel with threats such as whites-only sundown towns. Author and journalist Deborah Douglas has published a new kind of civil-rights guide.
This initiative—named after Tougaloo alumnus and U.S. Congressman Bennie G. Thompson—will focus on identifying and developing early-stage grassroots and community-led work and sustainable solutions in areas such as sustainable food systems training, social enterprise development models and workforce transportation.
This is an opportune time for us to work together to shed light on little known civil-rights people and places, to record oral histories of activists still living in our communities, and to explore collaborative proposals for national funding opportunities.
