“We found that race-targeted policies were associated with a significant increase in Black students, whereas race-neutral policies didn’t affect the percentage of Black, mixed and Indigenous Brazilian students in college,” Neil Lewis Jr., Inácio Bó and Rodrigo Zeidan write.
“The Supreme Court’s decision against affirmative action will significantly impact college students in the United States for years to come,” Dr. Arianna C. Stokes writes. “The impact can be viewed through the lens of three key areas: college choice, professional school acceptance and career trajectory.”
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves is welcoming the end of affirmative action for race-conscious admissions to colleges and universities after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that institutions must use “race-neutral” criteria when admitting students.
“As the Supreme Court looks ready to strike down affirmative action in college admissions, it’s my belief that unlike the court’s conservative majority, Johnson understood that the U.S. could not serve as a moral leader around the world if it did not acknowledge its past of racial injustices and try to make amends,” Travis Knoll writes.
“As scholars of constitutional law and civil rights, we believe that the ideological disagreements among the justices of color reflect the national division over how to address the legacies of slavery, Jim Crow and modern-day inequalities,” Schor and Lain writes.
“Some of the Supreme Court’s most important upcoming cases focus on the future of affirmative action, equal treatment of LGBTQ people, and the control of election laws,” Morgan Marietta writes. “The court will hear the cases in the fall and then likely issue rulings in spring 2023.”
College presidents between 1948 to 1968 had to deal with different segments of society that were at complete odds with one another.
On the one hand, they oversaw schools where students were increasingly protesting segregation. But they also had to deal with segregationist politicians who controlled state funding for their institutions.
The first Black woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court in history will be a “beneficiary” of affirmative action, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker said.
The Native American population in the U.S. grew by a staggering 86.5% between 2010 and 2020, according to the latest U.S. Census—a rate demographers say is impossible to achieve without immigration. Birth rates among Native Americans don’t explain the massive rise in numbers. Instead, individuals who previously identified as white are now claiming to be Native American. This growing movement has been captured by terms like “pretendian” and “wannabe.” Another way to describe this recent adoption of Native American identity is what I call “racial shifting.”
