A jury rendered a not-guilty verdict for Duane Lake, 35, for a capital-murder allegation against him in November 2021. He had been in jail since 2015 and got his freedom after the verdict. School Library Journal named Anastasia Higginbotham’s “Not My Idea” one of the best books of 2018. Mississippi State Auditor Shad White says it teaches racism as do all anti-racism books, calling Higginbotham “some white lady” who made up ideas about whiteness “five minutes ago.”
