(Context: “Bob” was Senator Robert Taft (R-OH), known for his opposition to the New Deal; the moderate but politically inexperienced Eisenhower defeated Taft in the Republican presidential primaries then abruptly took on a more conservative tone after winning the nomination in hopes of bringing Taft’s people on board, leading some folks to believe that Taft was the one calling the shots. Taft’s grandson is the outgoing Republican governor of Ohio, recently caught in some really nasty corruption scandals–and who now boasts an astonishing 6.5% approval rating, the lowest known rating for a governor in Ohio state history.)
