The City of Jackson announced Thursday afternoon that both northbound lanes of State Street between Tombigbee and Capital streets are temporarily closed to traffic for the remainder of the week. City Engineer Tim Bryan said the shutdown is due to a wall collapsing at the W.C. Donโ€™s Restaurant at 218 S. State Street around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.

The building was vacant and no injuries have been reported. The Jackson Police Department has officers on the scene directing traffic away from the collapse and safety barriers will be erected until the cleanup is complete. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes to bypass the area until debris has been removed and the street is open to regular traffic.

Wow! That’s crazy news… Luckily, no one was harmed.

Wow! Is Martin’s still standing?

Yes, Martin’s is still standing as is Don’s. Here’s an update from one of our writers: The city release is incorrect. The wall actually collapsed on Wednesday night. Luckily, the southern wall of W.C. Don’s had been fenced off earlier that day after large cracks were seen in the brickwork. The brief from Thursday’s Clarion-Ledger is at the end of this briefs column: http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060216/NEWS/602160376/1001/NEWS

Dang… this is a minor set back! Let’s get behind WC… Are they insured? Let’s start thinking of funding raising ideas.

We’re already talking about a fund raiser. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Great! (smile) We need more small businesses downtown like WC, Martins and Hal & Mals…

I wanted to cry when I saw the footage on TV tonight. I’m so glad that no one was hurt. I hope that the building’s owner can recover quickly from this and be able to salvage the structure. It’s about a century old, isn’t it?

excellent opportunity for renovations, haven’t seen pictures or driven by yet, It will be hard to just rebuild one wall since that building is so old.

the folks who run W.C. Don’s and the Doghouse are always very nice to us when we come in. I’m sorry this happened to them & would play at a benefit fundraiser if they needed it.

Thanks for the information Ms. Ladd!

Glad to hear they’re open again. Do you know what WJTV’s caption for this incident was? “Building Condemned”. Huh?

Latasha, You’re right. The news is even becoming so political that the local affiliates feel the need to sensationalize the headlines. It’s unfortunate, because it turns people off. But in some ways we are at their mercy if we want to at least get some of the story.

Do you know what WJTV’s caption for this incident was? “Building Condemned”. Huh? I agree. that’s really screwed up.

Did anyone inform WJTV of the flaw? www.wjtv.com We can’t continue to allow tv to hold Jackson businesses to this run down image… WJTV telephone number 601-944-4924 news or 601-372-6311 Adm. Fax: 601-373-8401 Question has anyone heared about plans for the J. Jam? I know this is off the subject…

I want to email them, but I’m not sure if I should email the news director, the assistant news director, or someone else. http://www.wjtv.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WJTV%2FPage%2FJTV_ContentPage&c=Page&cid=1056979784649

I am not sure. Maybe, Ms. Ladd can answer this one on how to handle complaints? I hope she don’t mind me pushing this toward her… If so, sorry! I am not up on the contact person over at wjtv. Bloggers please help!

Ok here is the link to the help desk link at wjtv… http://www.wjtv.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WJTV/Page/JTV_ContentPage&c=Page&cid=1056979784649

I saw that link but didn’t want to use it because it goes to the markting director. I’m just going to send it to the general manager and hope for the best. Thanks anyway.

“news director”, not “general manager”

keep us posted on the WJTV response if you receive one…
