The federal government has officially approved Mississippi’s major disaster declaration request from May 19, making funding available to residents and municipalities affected by severe storms and tornadoes earlier that month.
Under President Donald Trump’s approved declaration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide Individual Assistance to hard-hit residents in the following counties: Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln and Wilkinson. Four of those counties—Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence and Lincoln—will also qualify for help with debris removal and infrastructure repairs under FEMA’s Public Assistance program.
“Thank you to President Trump and his administration for continuing to help Mississippi rebuild from these devastating storms,” Gov. Tate Reeves said in a Thursday release. “This declaration will help our state’s recovery efforts and provide additional assistance to Mississippians. We continue to pray for our residents and the communities affected by these storms. The state of Mississippi remains in this for the long haul.”
Thursday’s authorization comes two days after the president wrote on Truth Social that he had approved $11 million in federal funding to assist Mississippi with recovery efforts. That post did not specify which areas would be eligible for the funding, nor the types of assistance FEMA would provide.
