____

Brian Johnson: The Clarion-Ledger quotes you as saying that employees ought to be able to talk about issues that concern themโ€”

Frank Melton: That is correct, and I feel very strongly about that.

BJ: OK. Then they had a quote later that you felt disrespected that they didnโ€™t go through the chain of command.

FM: That is correct.

BJ: Can you explainโ€”

FM: Absolutely. I want people to say whatever they want to say, with one covenant, and that is that it has to be the truth. The problem that I have here is that someone was very dishonest at the beginning of that story, when they said that they had tried to set up meetings with me. That is absolutely not true. Iโ€™ve not gotten a single call from any of them that have any concerns. When I was first elected, there was another young lady over the union. Her name is Chaundra. You can get her last name from the Fire Departmentโ€”theyโ€™ll verify this for you. She set up a series of meetings with me. I met with them three times, two times downstairs and one time upstairs at City Hall. Every time she called, I responded. Since sheโ€™s no longer the president of the union, Iโ€™ve never gotten a single call from this individual. And the problem that I have is that I want them to talk to you and I want them to feel free to talk to you, but they havenโ€™t said anything to the chief, they havenโ€™t said anything to me or anybody on my staff. And thatโ€™s just wrong.

We might disagree, publicly, but at least I have the right to know what the issues are. They just circumvented the chief, circumvented me, and went straight to you. At this point, they are on administrative leave. Thatโ€™s the decision that the chief has made, and Iโ€™m going to follow through on that. What theyโ€™ve done is wrong. This has been a systemic problem for a number of years. Either theyโ€™re going to straighten their act out or theyโ€™re not going to be firemen anymore.

BJ: And the systemic problem is griping to theโ€”

FM: Yes sir, they want to decide whoโ€™s going to be fire chief, and last time I checked I think thatโ€™s my decision. Iโ€™m not going to put up with that. Itโ€™s politics, pure politics. My thinkingโ€”and I could be wrongโ€”but my very strong thinking is that the taxpayers pay them to fight fires, not to start them. Thatโ€™s kind of where my heart is. I made the statement at the State of the City that I wasnโ€™t going to have anybody say anything negative about the city, and that includes city employees.

BJ: So you definitely are behind them being suspended. Youโ€™re supporting Chandler in that decision?

FM: Absolutely. Iโ€™m probably going to terminate them. What theyโ€™ve done is wrong. I donโ€™t mind them talking to you anytime they want to talk to you, but I want to make sure that they tell you the truth.

BJ: Do you think that things they told the media including us are not factually correct then?

FM: Well, we do have a shortage of firefighters, and Iโ€™ve already admitted that. Weโ€™re going to work on that and weโ€™re going to deal with that. The problem that I haveโ€”and Iโ€™m sure you can appreciate thisโ€”is that Iโ€™m learning it from the media, and not from them coming to me and saying, โ€˜Frank, this is what we need to deal with.โ€™ And the other thing on the suppliesโ€”you know, Iโ€™m in Kroger a few months ago with some officersโ€”we were just in there talking with some of the fire officialsโ€”and I found out then that theyโ€™re having to buy their own food. Theyโ€™ve always had to do that, and I think thatโ€™s wrong. But again, nobody has said anything to me. It has nothing to do with Chief Chandler. This is the way theyโ€™ve always operated. I donโ€™t care if itโ€™s somebody who works in public works, that works in the gutterโ€”if they have something that they need to tell me, I want them to come to us.

BJ: What do you think about them going to City Council and speaking to Mr. Allen about their issues?

FM: Iโ€™ve asked Mr. Allen to help me. Heโ€™s been there a lot longer than I have, and itโ€™s the right thing to do; he understands the issue a lot better than I do. One of the things that Iโ€™m trying to do is reach out and get some help. I have full confidence that Ben will help me make the right decision, and thatโ€™s what heโ€™s there for.

Yeah, I have no doubt at all that ol’ Ben will indeed help Melton pepetuate his madness….

How can he demand TRUTH when he doesn’t know the meaning of the word? How much is this going to cost us? Maybe Tony Davis and Danks can give us a hint.

I just simply don’t get it. This man, fm. does not stand supportive of the Police Chief when she fires officers for beating an 18 year old person who is handcuffed but, has absolutely no problem firing the firemen who is exercising their 5th Amendment Right. Why is he supportive of Chandler and not Sharlene? Is this a Black/White thing? Is it a Male/Female thing or is this another example of “Hitler-Like” behavior? Apparently he does not know the duties and responsibilities of the Council President. He never went to Chrisler for advice/help. As a matter of fact, fm showed a total disregard and disrespect for Chrisler. This man keeps saying that others (Ben Allen) know and understahnd the issues “a lot better than I do.” Didn’t he know this early on and couldn’t he have saved this community a lot of time, shame, blame, gas and money if he had admitted that before putting his name on the ballot? He holds the firemen to a zero tolerance for lying; however, this has been a trade mark for him.

Please forgive me for listing FREEDOM OF SPEECH under the 5th Amendment. I meant the First. Sorry for my fingers moving faster than my brain.

“Please forgive me” justjess I’ll forgive you anything ’cause you talk so pretty and so true! There are two threads on this topic. One here and one under the article. Please check out ‘wishers’ post there.
