Two Mississippi House districts will hold special elections on Nov. 3 after Reps. Price Wallace and Bo Brown died earlier in June, Gov. Tate Reeves announced in a press release.

Northeast Jackson voters in House District 70 will fill the vacancy left by Brown, a Democrat who died on June 8 after a lengthy illness. He had served in the House since 2020.

“Known for his wisdom, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public service, Brown leaves behind a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations,” Brown’s obituary said. “His contributions to education, government, and community development have left an indelible mark on the City of Jackson, Hinds County, and the State of Mississippi. Family, friends, colleagues, and constituents will remember him as a compassionate leader, devoted mentor, and tireless advocate for others.”

House District 77, which encompasses parts of Rankin and Simpson counties, will replace Wallace’s seat, which he left vacant after his unexpected death on June 3. He was a Republican from Mendenhall who had served in the House since 2018.

“His servant’s heart greatly impacted so many across the state and in the community through his passion for agriculture, rural communities and our youth, serving in many different capacities and roles throughout his life,” Wallace’s obituary said. “… Beyond all his accomplishments in life, his pride and joy were his family and friends. One of his proudest titles in life was ‘PawPaw.’ To know him is to love him! He lived life to the fullest until his last breath. Stories of his life and legacy will be told for many years to come.”

The qualifying deadline for candidates in the nonpartisan special elections is Aug. 20, 2026. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, a runoff election will occur on Dec. 1.

The Nov. 3 special elections occur on the same day as the federal midterm elections for all four of Mississippi’s U.S. House seats and Mississippi’s U.S. Senate seat currently held by incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Visit the Mississippi Secretary of State’s website for more information on qualifying to be a candidate in the special elections.
