JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Jackson State University security guard was found dead in a city street on Saturday morning.

WLBT-TV reports that 27-year-old Joseph Welch was shot five times, according to officials. Jackson police say Welch failed to show up for work at 10 p.m. Friday night.

“We got a shots fired call early this morning around 1:45 in this area,” said police spokewoman Colendula Green.

Welch was found dead along Capitol Street near the intersection of Kolb Street, according to Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart.

Stewart says Welch was shot several times in the arm, leg, torso and head.

Stewart believes Welch was dead for at least 10 hours before his body was discovered.
