The Kyoto Treaty is important, but the solution to global warming starts at home. Every small change helps. There are simple changes you can incorporate into your life.

• Drive less by combining errands, carpooling or moving closer to work.

• Increase fuel efficiency by keeping tires fully inflated.

• Replace your standard bulbs with efficient compact-fluorescent bulbs.

• Turn off lights when leaving a room.

• Reduce energy and water usage by installing low-flow showerheads.

• Purchase a tankless water heater that only heats water when you need it.

• Wash only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher.

• Turn off the heated-dry function on the dishwasher and dry with a towel instead.

• Wash clothes in cold water.

• Dry clothes outside on a clothesline.

• Turn the thermostat up three degrees in summer and down three degrees in winter.

• Install clean HVAC filters regularly to lower heating and cooling costs.

• Replace your old single-pane windows and fiberglass insulation.

• Plant trees in your yard.

• Start a backyard compost pile for food scraps and lawn waste.

• Recycle paper, metal, plastic and glass.

• Buy locally grown produce.
