Oddly enough, Dr. S has read some of his favorite sports stories in the Village Voice. Nobody has ever quite covered sports the way the Voice does. Much of the “hip” tone and style you read in today’s sports sections and magazines was being done in the Voice 20 years ago, particularly in the Jockbeat notes column. The latest issue includes a very interesting story on one of Dr. S’ favorite topics: uniforms. (All-time greatest high school uniforms: Laurel High. Blood and gold, baby.) Obviously, Dr. S is not the only sports fan who loves this topic; although some are more obsessive than others. Much more obsessive.

So you’re a ‘Naders fan? That’s very apropos, considering the philosophy of the JFP.

Thanks for writing, but Dr. S isn’t sure what the Laurel High Tornadoes’ uniforms have to do with the philosophy of the JFP. Not that the philosophy of the JFP has much impact on the Fabulous Sportsblog.

Oh, just that the Tornadoes have sometimes been called the “Naders,” which is the plural of the 2000 Green Party presidential candidate’s surname. I sometimes find humor in odd coincidences like that. BTW– Thank you for removing my excess instructions in the SI article thread.

Hey, I don’t often venture into Dr. S’ Amazing Sportsblogóhe growls too much at meóbut I must weigh in here as the editor of the JFP. For the record, I wrote a blistering critique of Ralph Nader during the 2000 presidential campaign. And I also heavily criticized President Clinton, and supported his impeachment, during the Lewinsky scandals/cover-up. So careful with the stereotypes. 😉 Donna

Oh, I get it. But a JFP-friendly team would be one that wears a Green uniform, like Vicksburg. … Growl.

A Gator fan? They’ve been good at least in the past few seasons as far as I’ve noticed. I saw them play once in 2001. Green… hmmm… No comment. *grin*

Mississippi native Donna Ladd and partner Todd Stauffer founded the Jackson Free Press in 2002 in the capital city. The heavily awarded local newspaper did many investigations heralded across the state and nation and served as a paper of record due to its diversity, inclusion, in-depth reporting and deep connection to readers and dedication to narrative change in and about Mississippi. In 2022, the nonprofit Mississippi Free Press, founded by Ladd and JFP Associate Publisher Kimberly Griffin in 2020, purchased the journalism assets and archives of the Jackson Free Press. A Google grant through AAN Publishers enabled Newspack's integration of the JFP archives into the Mississippi Free Press website to become part of a more searchable archive of recent Mississippi history and essential journalism.
