Tougaloo, MS – President Beverly W. Hogan announced today the establishment of a fund to aid college students impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Almost half of the College’s current student population was affected including the displacement of many students’ families. In addition, the fund will assist with the academic and personal needs of newly enrolled students from Dillard and Xavier Universities as well as other schools in the Mississippi and Louisiana areas that were devastated by the hurricane.
President Hogan said, “Creation of the Tougaloo Student Aid Fund is in keeping with the legacy of this special place. Our students are taught to use their education to uplift humanity and advance the ideas of a democratic society. This fund will enable us to assist our students who were impacted by the hurricane so that they may attain their degrees and carry on the Tougaloo tradition of becoming servant-leaders. Donations will be used to provide for any essential needs that these students may have such as books, educational supplies, and clothing.”
As of today, twenty students from affected institutions have enrolled at Tougaloo College. Hogan indicated that the College is prepared to enroll additional students and that the special registration period will continue through September 16th.
