— Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves switched around a couple Senate committee seats to fill a vacancy left by Sen. Merle Flowers, R-Southaven, who resigned earlier this year.

Sen. Burton, R-Newton will take over Flowers’ chairmanship of the 15-member Energy Committee, which Reeves established in January to oversee utilities, oil and gas and promotes economic development in those industries.

Burton was formerly chairman of the Universities and Colleges Committee. Sen. John Polk, R-Hattiesburg, who committee vice chair will assume the chairman’s seat.

Reeves will make other appointments after a Nov. special election to fill Flowers’ seat.
