I have been observing the protests on television news and I was inspired to write a political poem about what we as a nation in the United States are going through together.
The poem included in this article was inspired by the political times we are living in today. The uncertainty to feed ourselves, high gas prices, how will we be able to pay our bills, will we get paid at work, will we be able to pay our rent or mortgage, and feel safe in our neighborhoods. If we are going to leave our homes and come back.
This poem was something I wanted to always write but never had the guts to do it. But in order to reach people, I learned as a Christian to tell people where you have been and what is right, to tell the truth and state the facts.
The poem, “Right from Wrong,” is about justice and I wrote it for many reasons. It is about taking responsibility and accountability for decisions that affect other people. In this case, the United States and our allies abroad. We are fighting demons in high places. So, the question is, who’s side are you on: Right or wrong?
The person elected in the future will have to clean up a big mess and we are the ones who will have to decide the correct person who is truly up for the task. We have to make sure this time they are in the right frame of mind with policies that will help us, not hinder us. The reason is because they are going to have to mend broken ally relationships, and the domestic relationships with constituents in each state in the union in order to bring things back together in an orderly manner. However, this will take time, but it can be done. The protests prove it.

Poetry has always been a genre that spoke to the signs of the times. Many poets and writers have written poems that declare the freedoms we often take for granted. I remember reading Phyllis Wheatley as a little girl, and many of her critics felt she held back in her poetry because she was a slave and could read and write. Her poetry could only reflect to a certain extent the experiences she went through but never go into depth of what happened in her life.. We are also celebrating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence this year, so my poetic inspiration came at a good time.
So with that said, I present to you “Right from Wrong.”
I try my hand
Sharing the current politics of our land
Circumstances of society
The nature of democratic stance.
We know and record history
With a fine tooth comb,
But do we always tell the truth?
Or distort right from wrong?
The government is crushing,
The breath out of our flight
Wars and rumours of wars
The Bible was right,
These prophecies are coming to light.
As a citizen where will you stand?
As a person what side will you be on?
When the nation is divided down the middle,
And good from evil will be separated in a straight line.
The logic and reasoning behind protests
Is to unite black and white
Saving us from ourselves,
Saving us from those at the top
Who only wants to make a profit.
From the backs of those who built the nation.
There are those who want to turn back the clock,
Those who constantly lie,
My fellow countrymen,
Who will hear the nation’s cry?
God has us all protected. I had to write this poem to show I am fighting for my freedom to write and not be afraid to voice my opinion.
Though our nation is under pressure and stress, we must still pray for peace. We have to pray our leaders realize their decisions are affecting everyone. This poem was a poem of courage for me. Because what I was facing is important. By looking evil in the eyes, and fighting evil with good.
