God-des and She are a two-woman hip-hop team who combine hard-hitting rap lyrics with soulful back-up to create a sound that is as entertaining as it is rare. Currently, they are performing shows around the country and will make a stop in Jackson to perform at OUToberfest this weekend. I had a chance to call and speak with them about this event last week.
One of my friends, Knol Aust, is an organizer of OUToberfest. When he told me you were performing, I almost peed in my pants. I am an avid fan of “The L Word” and saw your performance on the finale at the end of the last season. I absolutely loved it, and I’m totally straight. How did you guys get that gig?
She: Networking in a bar in New York. God-des worked in a bar. She met this girl who walked up to her and said “you guys are so great, you made me cry.” It turns out this girl’s ex-girlfriend was in charge of the music for “The L Word.” We began e-mailing with her and started a relationship. We sent her our stuff, and she called the day after. Cooler stuff just keeps happening since then.
Ali: Is this your first performance in Mississippi? How did you hear about OUToberfest?
God-des: I got this MySpace message from a girl that said, “I want you to play in Mississippi so bad.” I asked her if she had any connections down there because we’d only done one other show in the South. She gave me Knol’s information after mentioning OUToberfest and that was all it took.
Ali: What’s the response to a self-professed “white dyke Jewish rapper” from Wisconsin in the “traditional” hip-hop community?
She: We’ve had a good response from both the gay and straight hip-hop community. I think whenever you keep it real people respond positively.
Ali: There is a gay hip-hop community? You’ll have to excuse me; I’m straight and really white.
She: (laughs) Yes. There is a documentary on the MTV channel LOGOS now on the gay hip hop community. We are a part of that show.
Ali: I totally suck at interviewing so I’m just going to have fun with it. What would your porn name be?
God-des: Ivana Humpalot.
Ali: Who’s on your list of top five women you want to have sex with?
God-des: Rosario Dawson is hot. And Angelina Jolie. She’s beautiful.
Ali: Hell, I’d do Angelina. She transcends gender lines. If you had the chance to smack George Bush in the face, open fist or closed fist?
God-des: Definitely closed fist. Whichever one would do the most damage.
Ali: I can sing the entire score to “Jesus Christ Superstar” from memory. What’s one strange talent you have that makes you absolutely no money?
God-des: I can sing all 50 states in alphabetical order. I learned it in sixth grade. It’s called the “Nifty 50 United States.”
Ali: That’s totally gay. OK. We might as well get this out of the way because inquiring minds will want to know. Do you have a girlfriend?
God-des: I don’t talk about that kind of stuff. I try to be mysterious. Who knows? I might, I might not.
Ali: I feel you. Trying to keep your options open. Damn.

Thanks, Casey, I LOVED them. We had a good time talking once they got over the shock of a little white girl from Mississippi being so offensive. I’m going to be ALL OVER THEM this weekend. They are really cool and really down to Earth.
