The Mississippi Free Press is hiring a full-time Revenue Coordinator.

The Mississippi Free Press, an award-winning nonprofit digital newsroom with national impact run by the nonprofit Mississippi Journalism and Education Group, is seeking a creative, organized revenue coordinator to join our diverse, cohesive and supportive team of journalism and nonprofit business professionals. After founding and running the Jackson Free Press for nearly 20 years in the capital city, visionary founder Donna Ladd and most of the JFP team worked together to start the statewide nonprofit Mississippi Free Press in March 2020 and immediately attracted widespread attention nationally and internationally for our mission-driven coverage of vital issues and stories and our deep impact.

Now, one of the largest newsrooms in the Mississippi with eight reporters, and the only one that routinely centers the people of Mississippi rather than politicians, we are now seeking a revenue coordinator to help grow and support our revenue/marketing/PR  and support our revenue team, as well as work closely with our rich base of individual donors inside and outside the state, understanding that our passionate support base is essential to our growth and longevity. The revenue coordinator will help plan, implement and support our revenue generation, including supporting advertising and sponsorship efforts, building rich relationships with donors on all levels, supporting our MFP VIP Club membership program, envisioning and coordinating revenue-producing events, and other visionary revenue ideas and implementation. The successful candidate will be outgoing, super-organized, and excited about fundraising and donor cultivation/stewardship and align with our mission to serve Mississippi and the nation through essential journalism. In addition to our fundraising leaders, you will be part of a dynamic team including our audience manager and marketing/PR coordinator. The revenue coordinator will work closely with and act as a team liaison between CEO/Executive Editor Donna Ladd and the fundraising team led by Development Director Cedric Grizzell, and our marketing and audience team members. You will also work closely with our board of directors and stakeholders, including MFP, donors, foundation partners and our fundraising committees. This position requires heavy telephone and email use as well as other forms of communication, as well as regular public appearances and participation at networking and other events across Mississippi and the nation.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Support year-round individual giving efforts on all levels in addition to bi-annual fundraising campaigns by coordinating and producing donor communications. This includes personal calls to every new donor, tracking pledge forms and donor lists, scheduling meetings for the CEO, development director and other team members; acknowledgement letters, handwritten thank yous; holiday cards; event invitations, reminders, and follow-ups.
  • Increase revenue streams, including imagining and coordination advertising outreach, as well as potential revenue-producing and marketing events. 
  • Help plan and implement Free Press 25, a year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of combined Free Press newsrooms, staff and content.
  • Produce weekly, monthly, and yearly reports of revenue and fundraising team efforts using our CRM and other tools as needed. Reports will track individual donors, recurring donors and other crucial benchmarks for our organization. 
  • Compile donor data for year-end reporting and grant reporting.
  • Research to build a pipeline of major donors and foundation prospects.
  • Track campaign goals and progress.
  • Track new, recurring, canceled donations and steward them along the relationship pipeline.
  • Track pledges, advertising invoices, advertising payments and offline donations. 
  • Assist with coordinating fundraising events by curating guest lists, creating/sending invites and coordinating with hosts, locations and vendors. 
  • Work on-site in your own office in Capital Towers in downtown Jackson, Mississippi.
  • Travel to events, solutions circles and donors meetups in Mississippi and nationwide as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

THE ESSENTIALS: 

  • The successful candidate should have at least three years of pertinent experience, preferably in media revenue cultivation, generation and stewardship.
  • Bring your passion for learning: This person must be knowledgeable or super-curious about donor engagement and research, fundraising platforms, fundraising CRMs, fundraising calendars and current fundraising technologies. 
  • Attend trainings inside and outside Mississippi (involving air travel) to increase knowledge of nonprofit media fundraising and other revenue generation.
  • Be nimble and able to pivot when priorities shift. Be willing to learn new things in the everchanging nonprofit media landscape. 
  • Have a background in or willingness to learn Google Suite, Bloomerang and Canva as well as other fundraising and tracking tools. 
  • Care deeply about the mission of the Mississippi Free Press, understanding that we are a nonpartisan newsroom focused on fair and balanced reporting, as well as inclusion in staffing, readership and coverage.
  • Be eager to network on behalf of the organization and help us grow readership as well as revenue streams. 
  • Be willing to talk with and grow supporters on the phone, via Zoom and in person.
  • Good writing and storytelling skills.
  • A stellar attitude about working with other team members in healthy, balanced ways.

THE NICE-TO-HAVES:

  • Experience in fundraising for nonprofit media.
  • Experience in grant writing.
  • Close ties to Mississippi and Mississippians.
  • Willingness to fly to journalism conferences and summits as well as other fundraising trainings, meetings and opportunities.

SALARY AND BENEFITS 

  • This non-exempt full-time position pay range starts at $50,000 a year with annual salary reviews based on the above criteria and meeting revenue goals. A higher salary is negotiable if you have strong experience and references inside media revenue generation, cultivation and stewardship.
  • The successful candidate can elect to participate in our health-insurance plan. We pay 100% of the employee’s medical, vision and dental benefits through our group plan; family members can be covered through employee contributions.
  • Full-time employees in the first three years of MJEG employment will receive 24 PTO days, 2 floater holidays and at least 10 closed holiday and winter-break days for a minimum total of 36 paid days off a year. Full-time employees after the first three years of MJEG employment will receive 30 PTO days, 2 floater holidays and at least 10 closed holiday and winter-break days for a minimum total of 42 paid days off.
