Main Squirrel Nut Zipper turned Oxford Honky Tonk Juke Jimbo Mathus returns to Hal & Mal’s on Friday night. Bernard Jenkins and the Kickers, Jackie Bell and Ironing Board Sam turn the spectrum to true blues at 930 Blues Café on Friday, and old school Subway houseband King Edward on Saturday. You can find the once and future Subway Lounge owner Jimmy King at Schimmel’s each Friday, and the other Subway houseband, The Houserockers each Saturday at Schimmel’s.
Make sure to check out alt.country, roots rockers Goodman County at Martin’s this Friday night. The New York neo-psych-folk bands The Bowman Twins and Lowry will also perform. Local favorites Goodman County were recently listed in the music magazine Spin as essential tracks to have, alongside Radiohead and My Morning Jacket. Make sure to flavor their unique grove and check them out.
The retro metal 80s hair band Scum Gumbo is at Headliner’s all weekend. You’ll find a very eclectic blend in the Hal & Mal’s area on Saturday. The Southern Fried Honky Tonk Disciples are at W.C. Don’s, and the world/jam band Mosaic is at Martin’s on Saturday, with D’Mar and the Nu Funk Society at Hal & Mal’s. Hit up our music blog online to read our D’Mar feature from two months ago. If you recall, D’Mar is the drummer for Little Richard whose been producing some records at his studio in Clinton. He has produced everyone from Wild Life Society and Children of the Cornbread, to Little Richard himself and local favorites Compozitionz. The 10-piece Nu Funk Society blends the best old school George Clinton funk and the latest R&B. Their sole function, to have you say at the end of a long evening…..”We danced, We Partied, We Got Funked to Death.”

Check out New Orleans singer/songwriter Grayson Capps and his Stumpknockers at Martin’s next Friday, January 20. Think of him as a literary deep-woods Americana Swamp Blues in a mix of Delbert McClinton, Steve Earle and JJ Cale. He had four tracks on the “Love Song for Bobby Long” soundtrack last year. HoneyTribe with Devon Allman will perform in the Bottleneck Blues Bar in Vicksburg, next weekend, January 20 and 21st. Happy New Year.
