House Bill 1390 would require doctors who practice at abortion clinics, like the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, to get admitting privileges at a local hospital. Virginia Schreiber

An anti-abortion “heartbeat bill” died in committee Tuesday, but this might not be the last we see of it.

Now, an amendment is pending to tack language from HB 1196 onto a bill to revise jail terms for child homicide.

Rep. Andy Gipson, R-Braxton, who introduced HB 1196, also chairs the House Judiciary B Committee, which could discuss the bill and proposed amendment in a future meeting.

On Wednesday, the Senate passed HB 1390 to put more restrictions on doctors who perform abortions in Mississippi’s only abortion clinic. Supporters of the bill, including Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, have said it will effectively close the clinic and end abortion in the state.

Legislators are off for the holiday weekend, and both the Senate and the House are scheduled to convene Monday at 4 p.m.
