A councilman representing south Jackson since 2009, Yarber gave high praise to late Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, whom Yarber said helped citizens have a place and voice in city government. โWe listen to those things and push out the best possible product for folks in the city,โ Yarber said.
Lumumbaโs leadership in pushing for water and sewer rate increases presents Jackson with a โgolden opportunity to fix roads, repair infrastructure (and) to bring wealth into the city,โ and to help small and minority-owned businesses, he said.
In his five years as a councilman in a mostly residential ward, Yarber said he has worked with neighborhood associations to expand community watch efforts and generate more interest in community-oriented police (COPS) meetings. Because of increased vigilance and cooperation among neighbors, Yarber pointed to a dramatic decrease in the number of house burglaries in the ward.
Yarber also linked unemployment to crime, saying that if elected mayor, he would be careful to award contracts to firms who hire Jacksonians and accept community engagement clauses in their agreements with the city. He also wants to ensure that the jobs that come to Jackson are quality.
โEverybody jumps up and gets gung-ho about hotels,โ he said. โA hotel says itโs going to produce 70 jobs, but what youโre not telling me is that, of those 70 jobs, 45 of them are for housekeepers, youโve got a few cooks, but there is no training program to ensure that housekeeper can one day become the front-desk manager.โ
With approximately $1 billion going into city projects over the next several decades, Yarber recognizes that contractors could be interested in currying favor with the next administration.
โContractors are donating,โ he said of his campaign war chest. โEverybody who believes the adage โYouโve got to pay to playโ applies (is making contributions), and I guess your question is, how do I deal with those allegiances. โฆ I donโt make promises to people other than to provide good government.โ
Asked whether he is the preferred candidate of the Jackson business community and Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership, Yarber replied: โIโve coached their children. Iโve taught their children. Iโve spoken to them at church camps, all of that. Iโm upset if white folks, if business folks, if whoever, donโt support me. Iโm offended by that.โ
โIโm offended if black folks donโt support me, because Iโve represented this city well. Iโve sat on that council, Iโve not embarrassed this city. Iโve represented this city and this council all over the country.โ
Yarber opened up about having been unfaithful to his wife of 12 years, Rosalind, which he wrote about the experience in a book titled โMan Tips: What She Wants You to Know,โ published in 2012.
โMy wife is an amazing lady. She has shown me a level of grace I ainโt know somebody could give to somebody else,โ Yarber said. โWe are a team now.โ
Yarber acknowledged that crime results from poverty, but added that poverty is the result of bad education. Yarber is playing on his background as a former educator and founding member of Alignment Jackson, which he said represents a โmarriageโ between JPS and the city, as the central component of his candidacy.

I can’t believe that Yarber has said so many positive things about his Public School Experience as Principal. I am very surprised that parents from Marshall Elementary School were not up front and center about the negative academic condition at Marshall during Yarber’s administration. Wheather he retired/was fired/or left to avoid the heat, these are the STATS and the FACTS: 2008 – 2009 – Score 122 “Academic Watch” 2009 – 2010 – Score 118 ” At Risk of Failing” 2010 – 201 1 “F A I L I N G” YARBER WAS PRINCIPAL DURING ALL OF THOSE YEARS AND HE LEFT AT THE END OF 2011. How do these people sleep at night while knowing that they are lying to voters? Just asking.

I don’t see how he would change the city in a good way when he has had the worst ward of all. Crime, etc. WHEN I SEE AND HEAR HIM, IT SEEMS HE IS RUNNING FOR THE POPULARITY OF THE POSITION. HIS EYES DON’T SHOW HONESTY. IT JUST DOESN’T TO ME. YOU CAN TELL ALOT ABOUT A PERSON WHEN YOU LOOK IN THEIR EYES. THE OTHER GUY EYES ARE DIFFERENT. HOPE JACKSON DONT MAKE A MISTAKE.
