Thomas Mayfield
Thomas "TJ" Mayfield has served as the executive director of the Mississippi Kidney Foundation since May 2022. As a former dialysis patient and 2019 recipient of a kidney transplant, he has first-hand knowledge of the daily struggles that Mississippi renal patients face. As executive director, Mayfield oversees all day-to-day operations including patient services, special projects and media. He recently served as the project manager of the Care 4 MS Medicaid Expansion Coalition and is the current project manager for the "Advancing Health Equity in Chronic Kidney Disease: Changing the Narrative to Serve Mississippi's Most Equitable Population" project with Jackson State University and the Mississippi Department of Health. Mayfield graduated from Alcorn State University in 2015 with a bachelor's in Social Science Education and in 2018 with a master's in Workforce Leadership. He also taught high school for 6 years before stepping into the nonprofit sector. Mayfield is a member of the Mississippi Black Leadership Institute, ForbesBLK, Mississippi Economic Council Leadership Mississippi, Alport Syndrome Emerging Leadership Council, State Health Improvement Plan Diabetes and Youth Mentorship Task Force, Southern Poverty Law Center Advocacy Institute Fellowship, and is the founder of the Kidney Kick-Off and the Mississippi Kidney Foundation Kidney Cares Podcast. He is also the recent author of the article Mississippi View of COVID-19 and Kidney Failure in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
