Former Mississippi art teacher and “Justice for Emmett Till” advocate Sonny Strauss shares his journey of digging into his own ancestry, where he learned that his ancestors were some of the first wealthy, white, slave-owning individuals in Virginia.

Sonny Strauss, native of Calabasas, Calif., is an artist and former teacher currently working in an educational field for climate change. Strauss has an art education degree, an endorsement in social studies and a master’s degree in liberal studies from Delta State University. He also taught as an art teacher in public schools for five years in Greenville, Miss.; Cleveland, Miss.; and Oxford, Miss.
