Many visitors comment on how the slaves were treated like family, or how their housing doesn’t seem that bad. Some would rather skip the whole slavery thing altogether and just comfortably learn about the decorative arts and the often luxurious lives of the white families who lived there.
Kelley Fanto Deetz
Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz is the Director of Programming, Education and Visitor Engagement at Stratford Hall. She holds a BA in Africana Studies and History from The College of William & Mary, an MA in African American Studies and Ph.D. in African Diaspora Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Deetz works as a historical consultant for several museum sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and partnered with National Geographic to work on projects related to Nat Turner.
