To shine light on why students cheat, we conducted an analysis of 79 research studies and published our findings in the journal Educational Psychology Review. We determined that a variety of motivational factors, ranging from a desire for good grades to a student’s academic confidence, come into play when explaining why students cheat.

Dr. Carlton J. Fong is an assistant professor in the Graduate Program in Developmental Education and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University. As a scholar-activist at the intersection of educational psychology and higher education, Dr. Fong uses a sociocultural lens to study motivational factors influencing postsecondary student engagement, achievement, and persistence. Dr. Megan Krou is a Research Analyst in the Office of Institutional Research at Texas State University. As an applied educational researcher and scholar-activist, she is committed to leveraging research in educational psychology to benefit postsecondary students. Specifically, she examines student motivation factors as it relates to student engagement and academic dishonesty.
