“My research is aimed at identifying what drives high rates of suicide among certain groups,” April Smith writes. “Better understanding what causes active duty service members and veterans to think about and plan suicide is imperative for efforts to prevent it.”
April Smith
April Smith is the director of the Research on Eating Disorders and Suicidality Laboratory and an associate professor of Psychological Sciences at Auburn University. She received her PhD from Florida State University’s Clinical Psychology Program in 2012 and completed her clinical residency at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Smith was an associate professor at Miami University before starting at Auburn in 2021. She was named a 2016 Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science. Dr. Smith has received over $6.5 million in funding from the Department of Defense and NIMH to support her work.
