Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday afternoon in Plains, Ga., surrounded by family. In his one term, he built a reputation as a global humanitarian and champion of democracy, and he later earned a Nobel Peace Prize while making himself the most internationally engaged of former presidents.
