Saturday, start your hot day off right by cooling off with ice cream the Jackson Zooâs annual Ice Cream Safari (2918 W. Capital St.) starting at 11 a.m. $2 plus regular admission. If youâre in a creative mood, head to Joyflow Yoga (7048 Old Canton Rd., Ridgeland) for a kirtan âplayshopâ held by the Mayapuris at 3 p.m. with a concert at 7 p.m. $30 workshop; $20 concert; $45 for both. If youâre more in the mood for rocking out and enjoying barbeque, F. Jones Corner (303 N. Farish St.) is hosting âBeer and Bones,â starting at noon, which includes a grilling competition, an arts and crafts festival, and music by Iron Feathers, The Peoples, The Bailey Brothers and Sunny Ridell. $10 cover and $2 beer. Head to the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium (2531 N. State St.) if you havenât gotten your fill of barbecue at 7 p.m. where Clay Walker and Joe Diffie perform during The Mississippi Barbecue Championship. Doors open at 4 p.m.; tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children in advance through Ticketmaster; $25 at the gate.
Sunday, sleep in and eat brunch at Fenianâs (901 E. Fortification St.) (served until 3 p.m.), and stick around for âMostly Monthly Ceili,â free Irish dance and music, from 2-5 p.m. Or, go enjoy a performance by the Improv Alliance at North Midtown Arts Center (121 Millsaps Ave.) at 2 p.m. Later, if youâre not ready for your weekend to be over, Norman Clark and Smoke Stack Lightning perform at the Dog Days of Summer outdoor concert at F. Jones Corner from 6 to 10 p.m; free.
