Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn announced a bipartisan slate of lawmakers who will comprise his Speaker’s Commission on Life and steer the effort to craft legislation focused on pregnancy, children and families.
Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn said on May 9, 2022, that “the Mississippi House of Representatives would not move legislation banning contraceptives forward,” describing concerns over the possibility in the event of the overturn of Roe v. Wade as left-wing “scaremongering.” But in 2011, Gunn endorsed the Personhood Amendment, a ballot initiative 58% of voters rejected that would have banned all abortions in addition to endangering several forms of contraception, such as IUDs and Plan B.
Medical marijuana came a step closer to becoming a reality in Mississippi this afternoon as lawmakers in the Mississippi House of Representatives voted to approve a bill that would legalize it for some patients in the Magnolia State.
Of all the priorities in the near future for the short session, none has been more comprehensively discussed, tweaked, debated and recalibrated than the state’s long-awaited medical-marijuana plan. With a supportive majority across both the House and Senate, only Gov. Tate Reeves’ opposition threatens the plan’s adoption.
