A Mississippi federal judge, Carlton W. Reeves, could soon become the first Black chair of the United States Sentencing Commission after President Joe Biden announced a slate of nominees on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, 124 years after Ida B. Wells-Barnett first visited the White House to campaign for a federal antilynching law, her efforts finally paid off as her great-granddaughter, Michelle Duster, stood next to President Joe Biden while he signed the Emmett Till Antilynching Act into law.
In her 2021 book, “Nice White Ladies: The Truth about White Supremacy, Our Role in It, and How We Can Help Dismantle It,” Jessie Daniels, a sociology professor at Hunter College, City University of New York demythologizes her family’s own fabrication of whiteness and what it means to be considered—at least in appearance—a “nice, white lady.”
Growing up, I had heard about Mississippi. I saw the Confederate battle emblem displayed above and inside the government buildings on arrival.
