Each night before I go to bed, I have lofty goals for the next morning. I set my alarm for 5:30 and I envision jumping out of bed and heading to the gym. But more often than not, I end up hitting the snooze button for another two hours, because I love to sleep. So, Iโ€™m looking for a wake up call. I need someone to get me out of bed. If you have recommendations on how to find a wake up call at 5:30 a.m, please let me know.

Go to sleep earlier. Also, make a smoothie the night before to drink before you go to the gym. I usually put either coffee grounds or part of a Red Bull in mine. The most important part is developing the mindset that you don’t have a choice. You wouldn’t hit the snooze button and miss work, so don’t do it for the gym. After a while, it will become habit. If you make it to the gym three times a week, you’re doing pretty good. [c]

I think the problem is that I get too much sleep. I’m in bed most nights by 10:30 p.m. Thanks C Myers!

Too much sleep? Yeah, I think sleeping is addictive. It seems to effect me that way. Both of us need to get in “got to get moving” mode. Any big change hurts for a few days but then it’s downhill.

Do you have a workout partner? Me, I like to work out alone, but I do it in the afternoon or evening. Having a partner that will commit to working out with you makes you more accountable. It probably won’t make it any easier to get up in the mornings, but you might feel a twinge of guilt at letting the other person down.

It’s primarily because youre trying to go from waking up at 8 or 8:30, and then rushing to work, to waking up at 5:30. Make the progression in little steps over the course of a few weeks and your body wont be pissed off when you try to jolt it from rest. Otherwise youll just end up being a morning monster like your sister…

The Mississippi Free Press produced this story through the MFP Solutions Lab, supported by the Solutions Journalism Network. This series digs into Mississippiโ€™s systemic issues and sheds light on responses to them in other communities. Beyond just reporting on problems, these stories interrogate their causes and inspect potential solutions.

Mississippi native Donna Ladd and partner Todd Stauffer founded the Jackson Free Press in 2002 in the capital city. The heavily awarded local newspaper did many investigations heralded across the state and nation and served as a paper of record due to its diversity, inclusion, in-depth reporting and deep connection to readers and dedication to narrative change in and about Mississippi. In 2022, the nonprofit Mississippi Free Press, founded by Ladd and JFP Associate Publisher Kimberly Griffin in 2020, purchased the journalism assets and archives of the Jackson Free Press. A Google grant through AAN Publishers enabled Newspack's integration of the JFP archives into the Mississippi Free Press website to become part of a more searchable archive of recent Mississippi history and essential journalism.
