Paul Krause, who spent months reporting for the Delta-Democrat Times in Greenville, Miss., reflects on his career and how the state’s history with race affected his and his colleague’s reporting.

Paul Krause, who taught history for 30 years at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, is the author of the definitive history of the Homestead Lockout of 1892, “The Battle for Homestead: Politics, Culture, and Steel.” He also writes occasionally for newspapers including his hometown paper, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Krause, who lives in Victoria, BC, is writing a book about race and identity in the USA. Prior to his career as a history professor, he worked as a reporter for newspapers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; North Adams, Massachusetts; Greenville, Mississippi; and Raleigh, North Carolina. His writing has been supported by generous grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the U.S. Department of State, the Andrew Mellon Foundation and Duke University.
