During an appearance Friday at Marshall’s Bookstore in Jackson, Mississippi, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom explained what his philosophy will be if he is ultimately elected.
“My job is to do well enough as the next United States senator that the next time some young Black boy or girl has the work ethics, the vision, and the values, and they want to be United States senator, that nobody says, because of anything I’ve done, that they shouldn’t get a chance, right? I want to show that I’m gonna be very ethical. I’m all, you know, do what I think is best for the state,” he said.
“If people disagree with me, I’ll explain why I thought, you know, what I did was right, and I want the next boy or girl that has that dream to know, listen, I want them to be judged by the content of their character, and not the color of their skin. I still believe in that. That’s how I was raised. I still believe in that.”
State Reporter Heather Harrison has won more than a dozen awards for her multi-media journalism work. At Mississippi State University, she studied public relations and broadcast journalism, earning her Communication degree in 2023. For three years, Heather worked at The Reflector student newspaper: first as a staff reporter, then as the news editor and finally, as the editor-in-chief. This is where her passion for politics and government reporting began.
Heather started working at the Mississippi Free Press three days after graduation in 2023. She also worked part time for Starkville Daily News after college covering the Board of Aldermen meetings.
In her free time, Heather likes to sit on the porch, read books and listen to Taylor Swift. A native of Hazlehurst, she now lives in Brandon with her wife and their Boston Terrier, Finley, and calico cat, Ravioli.
