On March 9, 2022, Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba asked the Hinds County Chancery Court to define the limits of the powers of the Jackson City Council with regards to his declaration of a garbage-disposal emergency.Â
Waste Management Inc. will continue to pick up trash for six more months with the City going through another round of contract procurement during that period, ending a standoff between Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba and the Jackson City Council, at least for now. Today, the city council decided to dismiss the case it had brought on Monday, Sept. 27, and provide a service continuity after the current Waste Management contract lapses at midnight tonight.
Due to disagreement between Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba and the Jackson City Council, the fate of garbage collection in Mississippi’s capital city is still uncertain just one day before the current contract expires. The Jackson City Council and Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba are to appear before Hinds County Chancery Court Judge Tiffany Grove on Thursday, Sept. 30.

Tate Reeves since 2011, and its lobbying arm spent more than $800,000 on activities at the Mississippi Legislature during his time as lieutenant governor.Â
