Linda Burks owed more than $4,000 for her breast-cancer treatment at St. Dominic, a nonprofit, faith-based hospital in Jackson that hired a debt collector to sue her. After reading the investigative series, an anonymous woman was moved to action. Earlier this month, she connected with Burks and paid off her medical debt.
Thousands of Mississippians who have gone to the nonprofit St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson for medical care and were later sued over medical debt, a tactic that rarely brings much revenue to hospitals, but can have devastating impacts on patients. Giacomo Bologna investigates.
