Teacher, activist and urban planner James Lap Baker was one of many survivors of the tragic Jackson State University Gibbs-Green shooting on May 14, 1970, where Mississippi Highway Patrolman fired 50 rounds across campus, killing two and injuring 12 students. On Jan. 30, 2026, he passed away at the age of 77.
