For over 30 years, Waste Management, Inc., has been the garbage-disposal contractor for Jackson. After the council twice rejected FCC Environmental Services as the contractor last year, Waste Management began running a six-month garbage-disposal contract to last till March 31, 2022, six weeks away.

On January 14, Jackson Indie Music Week’s “The Culture Rap Concert” commenced at Hal and Mal’s in Jackson. Brad Franklin first conceptualized the idea for Jackson Indie Music Week as a 10-year plan because he knew that things do not just happen overnight. “Mississippi is the birthplace of America’s music,” Franklin expressed. “It’s time that we kind of seize that moniker, and we seize that narrative, and we run with it.”
Joshua Cable owns and operates Kingdom Cities Network, a business-focused ministry, alongside his wife, Monica Cable. After receiving Mayor Lumumba’s signed proclamation on Feb. 1, 2020, Cable has annually used the honor to spotlight members of the Jackson metro community and their own contributions to lifting up those around them. This year, Cable partnered with the Best of Mississippi awards to present certificates of honor to local farmers: D.J. Oren D’Lonte Anderson was only 22 when he died from gunfire in South Jackson in late 2020 during a December spike of both COVID-19 and homicides in Mississippi’s capital city. His mother Shannon Anderson believed he was on the path to succeeding in life although he suffered from an under-treated mental illness.
City of Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba said he spoke with New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., mayors, where Richard’s Disposal operates, who gave the company positive reviews. However, on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, the city council rejected the company as a garbage-disposal contractor.
