Vice President Kamala Harris came to the 82.4% Black town of Greenville to talk about the Biden administration’s efforts to ensure that small business owners get resources they need to rebuild, especially in underserved communities like Greenville.Â
Heinz Endowments honors Hope Credit Union CEO Bill Bynum for bringing attention to the problem of financial access for the people in the Deep South. The organization added that Bynum received the award for his work at the helm of Hope Credit Union and for combating race, gender and locational barriers to wealth.Â
Altogether, 18 business owners gathered at The Synergy Link at 135 Bounds St. in the capital city on Sept. 17, 2021, to listen to Hope Credit Union Senior Credit Officer Danielle Ware and Vice President Dwight Rawls. Mississippi Black Pages, a statewide platform for Black entrepreneurs to connect for exposure and development, organized the event as part of their monthly series tagged “Network your Net Worth Professional Mixer.”
The duplicitous nature of the relationship between policy makers and Wall Street opens the door to predatory lenders who prey on disenfranchised residents whose only access to banking is check cashing centers, payday-loan stores and ATMs. Major banking institutions like Wells Fargo and TD Bank have agreed to pay back hundreds of millions of dollars in restitution for illegal practices that targeted ADOS and other marginalized consumers.Â
Calandra Davis’ work as a policy analyst at the Hope Policy Institute in Jackson focuses on topics including affordable housing, banking access and debt, issues she also encounters as an activist. She believes elections should lead to real change for those who need it most.
