University of Mississippi alumnus and long-time donor Jim Barksdale reached out to the Mississippi Free Press Friday, July 10, to clarify his involvement in fundraising efforts for the Confederate monument relocation and controversial cemetery-enhancement vision one critic called a “CSA statuary.”
A trail of documents and emails shows how a plan to relocate the University of Mississippi’s rebel-soldier statue turned into an enhanced Confederate cemetery some call a “shrine.” But it didn’t happen overnight. The MFP’s investigation unpacks several years of machinations and strategy and lifts the curtain on how it happened.
“They have pulled a fast one here,” the source told the Mississippi Free Press. “They pretended to surrender the position of the monument when they are, in fact, putting it in a (more prominent) place.”

UM students: The proposed relocation plan contradicts the University of Mississippi community’s priorities as reflected in resolutions passed through the university’s representative bodies and in the university’s creed.
IHL voted June 18 to move the University of Mississippi’s beleaguered rebel statue, after years of efforts by students and others with much less reverence for the Confederacy than Charles Scott and the women who erected the statue to celebrate the “lost cause” of white supremacy.
In response to the brutalization of these black bodies, Tougaloo College is continuing the tradition of freedom fighting by establishing the Reuben V. Anderson Institute for Social Justice. “It remains our responsibility to contribute to the education of students to train them to become the ethical leaders, change agents and social justice advocates of tomorrow making meaningful change throughout the world,” Tougaloo College President Carmen J. Walters said.
