Solar energy is on the rise in southeastern states, but Mississippi is lagging behind; less than 1 percent of the state’s electricity comes from solar power. Our region and nation remain heavily dependent on dirty, expensive fossil fuels. Fortunately, Mississippi has a secret weapon in the fight for affordable, clean energy: rural electric cooperatives.
I pored over boxes of papers, thousands of pages. I began to recognize typewriter fonts from the 1960s and ‘70s and marveled at the legibility of past penmanship, and got used to squinting when it wasn’t so clear. What those papers revealed is now changing our understanding of how climate change became a crisis. The industry’s own words, as my research found, show companies knew about the risk long before most of the rest of the world.
In August, the IPCC released its most recent and updated report on what we know about climate change, and it read like a marriage counselor giving a final word of advice to the partner causing all of the relationship turmoil.
