A state-run court in the City of Jackson, Miss., will soon be able to move forward, a federal judge reaffirmed as he upheld H.B. 1020.
Allowing House Bill 1020 to stand “would constitute a tremendous transfer of power from the voters of Mississippi, who have for over 100 years elected our circuit judges, to the Legislature,” attorney Cliff Johnson told eight members of the Mississippi Supreme Court during hearings Thursday.
Funds for improving infrastructure in Jackson’s capitol district will be spread thin if Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signs House Bill 1020 into law, Capitol Complex Improvement District Project Advisory Committee Chairperson Rebekah Staples said at Thursday’s quarterly meeting.
“Because Mississippi’s future prosperity depends on the success of Jackson, we encourage state leaders to put aside racial, class and partisan bias, seek solutions emerging from all Jacksonians—especially the most vulnerable citizens—while putting your respective faith traditions and moral principles into action,” interfaith leaders write.
The state-run Capitol Police would have jurisdiction over the entire capital city and would be required to wear body cameras under an amended version of Mississippi House Bill 1020 that the Mississippi Senate passed on March 7, 2023.
“The Mississippi Legislature creates laws without input from any experts,” News Editor Ashton Pittman writes. “That held true last week, when, as Kayode Crown reported, lawmakers passed a ban on care for transgender minors without input from one transgender Mississippian or any medical professionals with expertise on the topic.”
The Jackson City Council passed a resolution calling House Bill 1020 an “unconstitutional” effort that “would deprive the citizens of Jackson of their right to elect judges according to the Mississippi Constitution.”
