Before Europeans claimed Choctaw land for their own in the early 19th century, the tribe owned a large swath that cut across the present-day state.
For the young Black Mississippi activists who organized the BLM Sip march in June 2020, changing the state flag was an important symbolic start. Now, they want to bring true racial justice to the Magnolia State when it comes to the areas of voting, criminal justice, education and more.
In March 2021, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History announced that it has repatriated 403 Native American remains and 83 lots of burial objects to the Chickasaw Nation, the largest return of human remains in the stateâs history and the first for the department. The repatriation started a year ago in January 2020 and is ongoing as the department is about halfway through the process.
