No placard encapsulating what lies ahead greets visitors at the entrance of “From Couture to da’ Streets,” a fashion exhibit at the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience in Meridian. The exhibit celebrates Patrick Kelly and TJ Walker, Black fashion designers from some of the most rural parts of Mississippi who honed their creativity to craft unique clothing lines despite challenges they faced in the field as African Americans.
The nurse also owns Xperience Jxn Entertainment, an event company that started out of her need to put on exciting events in the capital city after hearing complaints about how there is little to do in Jackson.
“They can spend Jackson money in Jackson, and then we can also attract people from other cities to bring money to Jackson, spend money and leave money here in Jackson,” Singleton said. She also wants the money they spend to help people living with HIV.
Mississippians in underserved areas now have access to subsidized HIV-prevention services, including prophylactic treatment, from a distance. Combined with promising but underused Medicaid programs, the initiative has the potential to drive down the state’s critically high HIV and other STD rates.
“Social distancing,” the term used to describe proximity restrictions to prevent transmission of viruses, is a disruption of our cultural and social norms, and many people are still struggling with that. My family, friends, and hula brothers normally greet each other with hugs and kisses. We join hands in prayer.
