Democratic Mississippi Sen. John Horhn has defeated incumbent Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba in the Democratic primary runoff to lead the capital city, Tuesday night’s election results show.

Democratic candidates for the Ward 6 and Ward 7 Jackson City Council seats were also on the ballot, along with the Republican candidates vying for their party’s nomination for mayor.

These results do not include write-ins.

William Pittman is a native of Pascagoula, Miss., and has won multiple awards for his investigative data and elections work for the Mississippi Free Press since 2020.

Capital City reporter Shaunicy Muhammad covers a variety of issues affecting Jackson residents, with a particular focus on causes, effects and solutions for systemic inequities in South Jackson neighborhoods, supported by a grant from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. She grew up in Mobile, Alabama where she attended John L. LeFlore High School and studied journalism at Spring Hill College. She has an enduring interest in Africana studies and enjoys photography, music and tennis.
