Calendar Editor
Winter/Spring 2023
The Mississippi Free Press, an award-winning nonprofit digital newsroom with national impact, run by the nonprofit Mississippi Journalism and Education Group, is seeking a part-time events calendar editor to join our diverse, cohesive and mutually supportive team. The women-founded Mississippi Free Press, named the Institute for Nonprofit News’ Startup of the Year in 2021, launched at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and immediately attracted widespread attention nationally and internationally for our mission-driven coverage of vital issues and stories.
MJEG/MFP is looking for a high-energy, organized person who loves writing and who, ideally, enjoys networking virtually and in person. The calendar editor will enter and verify event details for MFPās new statewide online calendar. This includes reaching out to event promoters and venues throughout Mississippi to ensure we cover diverse and inclusive Mississippi events that our readers will want to know about around the state. The calendar editor will be comfortable making phone calls, and sending emails, social-media messages and texts for event updates.
The ideal candidate could assist the executive team with scheduling interviews for MFP Live and MFP VIP Club member events and help promote events and listings on social media. It is a plus but not required if you have event-planning experience to help support and lead small and large events throughout Mississippi.
The calendar position can be done remotely from inside Mississippi, although the calendar editor is expected to attend on-site staff meetings and training workshops, and is encouraged to work with the on-site team when possible or needed.
