Oak Grove High School students are fighting back against what they claim is an atmosphere of racism and indifference in a historic white flight suburb in Mississippi’s Lamar County.
The Confederate soldier could get the last laugh in his new home at the University of Mississippi. Under UM’s Master Plan, he could be adjacent to a new Tad Smith Mall, with the statue’s walkway feeding into what is slated to be called the “New Grove.”
After just over a week of classes, students at Oak Grove Middle School will go all-virtual until Aug. 16 starting Tuesday amid widespread outbreaks of COVID-19.
Only days into the semester, some school districts in South Mississippi are walking back their decision to make masking optional. Yesterday, the Lamar County School District announced that two of its schools, Oak Grove High School and Purvis High School, were shutting their doors on Monday and going all-virtual until Aug. 16 “due to the high transmission rate of COVID-19.”
Between 2016 and 2019, the Mississippi Department of Human Services and nonprofits associated with it allegedly misspent more than tens of millions of dollars in federal Temporary Assistance For Needy Families funds that should have gone to the poorest families in the poorest state. More than $5 million of those funds went toward a volleyball-stadium project at the University of Southern Mississippi favored by retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre and $1.1 million went to Favre himself.

Schools find themselves closing as soon as they open as entire districts see their newly relaxed coronavirus strategies buckling under the weight of the delta variant. Hospitals are faring even worse; as of Monday morning, every single staffed intensive-care unit bed in the state is full.
