For weeks, Hinds County and the city of Jackson have been at odds with one another over county supervisors’ recent decision to adopt the recommendations of the county E-911 Commission.
The commission had approved the purchase of a Motorola-based emergency communication system for Jackson, despite the protest of some council members who preferred to patch the city’s current M/A-com communication system—especially since state and federal guidelines on disaster preparedness may soon require a different system than the one the county wants the city to purchase from Motorola.
Last week, though, supervisors gave in to the City Council, and the council issued a resolution thanking supervisors for their understanding.
“The Hinds County Board of Supervisors voted 4-to-1 (with Supervisor Doug Anderson the lone opposing vote) to wait to purchase any hardware until the state picks its own hardware, and (the council is) very appreciative of them,” said Ward 1 Councilman Ben Allen, who led the fight to stop the Motorola purchase.
